Investing for Social Change

The primary tools of the social investor are sustainability research and portfolio screening, corporate dialogue, conscientious proxy voting, sponsorship of shareholder resolutions and public policy advocacy.  Grounded in our commitment to meet clients' investment objectives and our shared vision for a healthy and just society, Walden works to strengthen corporate responsibility and accountability by being active in each of these strategies.

Meeting Clients' Social Criteria

We evaluate companies in five broad areas of analysis: products and services, environmental impact, workplace conditions, community impact and corporate governance.  Our methodology allows us to screen out companies that fail to meet a client's minimum standards and screen in companies with exemplary performance on specific issues or those providing solutions to social problems. Social Research & Portfolio Screening

Improving Corporate Social Performance

We use our clients' positions as shareholders to communicate with and press corporate management to address environmental, social, and corporate governance issues. Through dialogue with company decision-makers and sponsorship of shareholder resolutions, we build awareness among corporate directors and managers that investors care about more than just financial returns. Shareholder Advocacy

Proxy Voting

As portfolio manager, we assist clients in exercising their shareholder rights through proxy voting. Our proxy service is designed to reflect our clients' positions on key financial and social issues. Proxy Voting

Public Policy and Education

We make sure that the views of our clients are heard in public policy forums to advance regulations and laws to strengthen corporate responsibility, corporate governance and public accountability. We also offer technical assistance, when appropriate, to policy makers, investors, and non-governmental organizations. Public Policy and Technical Assistance
